Carousel of Progression

Science and technology have evolved throughout the years as I’ve personally seen progress grow from what it used to be and to what it has become. Such is proven through this course and the resources we have access to in order to complete all tasks. Advancing as a society is what makes the world go round like a carousel.... of progression. It all starts with ideas and dreams that soon become a reality, and soon after extends through more ideas and dreams. These ideas went from old-wired phones, large computers, different entertainment and few medical advancements to wireless technology, pc builds, laptops, variety of entertainment, and a wider range of medical advancements.

Wired phones back when I was a child was a great privilege because it meant that I could in fact ask my friends for their phone numbers to call when us kids were at home. At the time I would call my best friend to talk about silly things which by then included tv shows through the big boxes we would refer to as televisions. PBS kids was my most reliable channel as sometimes my parents would buy cable but then sometimes cancel the cable. Not soon after they came out with better cellphones with the buttons, which I still wasn’t allowed to have because I was a child. Every morning I would wake up early before going to school because I wanted to watch the Mr. Men Show as that was the only entertainment I had. Google was available in my childhood, but realistically back then it was hard to own a computer, but I was fortunate enough that my parents bought the small box of what was a computer along with its many sounds. There weren’t many things I could do as a kid except daydream, play outside, and write notes for my friends to pass along the following school day.

Science is everything and more in our world, even back then to today because it was and is utilized to improve our health. I personally tend to get sick a lot so the medicine that has come out has surely improved compared to what it was in my childhood. Now I say this because there was a point in my life where I was forced to take a medication that I can only describe as death in a bottle. Bubblegum flavored medicine had nothing on this death in a bottle, but it did help me get better. I never had to take that medicine ever again because again, thanks to science, they came out with better cures. Science is amazing as vaccinations have also stayed up to date, and that includes when COVID spread. It is unfortunate that many died due to COVID, but now they’ve updated the doses on the vaccination against COVID. There have also been many medical discoveries throughout the years thanks to science which progressed through the advancement of technology.

As the years have gone by many forms of entertainment have come out such as games, shows, reality shows, and many reading options. Game development has improved from its graphics and sounds which can be proven through examples such as Pokémon, Legend of Zelda, or Super Mario. They went from pixel graphics to 2D graphics, and then went to 3D graphics but it also included the sound quality of the games, as well as how smooth games now run. Personally, my only experience back in the early 2000s was the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, GameCube, then the Nintendo DS which was specifically the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl edition DS. There were only two games in which I ever got to play which were Rune Factory, and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure.

In terms of shows, there have been improvements as well because if my memory serves correctly, people in the news had to wear makeup a certain way because of the lighting and the way it would come out on television. That’s one aspect of it, but also back on the topic of graphics, many cartoons went from small defects here and there to impeccable graphics we have come to love now. As a child my parents were strict, and the only cartoon aside from PBS kids that I was allowed to watch was The Simpsons. Once I got older, I was able to watch Family Guy, so I did eventually get to watching many seasons around 2015 which I have now caught up with. One of my favorite episodes (season 10, episode 5) is about how Stewie and Brian go back to the past; and they poke fun at their pilot episode which was back in 1999 to show just how bad their graphics were back then. Funny how back then we really thought the graphics were amazing, but now it has been proven very wrong with today’s amazing graphics.

Reality shows were most definitely part of every teen upbringing just because they shaped the era somewhere in 2010 more or less when MTV took over. I loved flipping over to the MTV channel to have musical videos playing, watching Parental Control, then slowly Jersey Shore took over. Now we have a variety of shows to pick from, and yet I know for a fact a lot of people rewatch a couple of the same shows such as The Office, Parks and Recreation, and How I Met Your Mother. Personally, I love all three and I make references to them all the time, mostly How I Met Your Mother. If I could describe myself though I would say I have the personality of Leslie Knope with the same disinterest in Li’l Sebastian as Ben Wyatt. I “LITERALLY” love quoting the scene in the harvest festival in season 3, episode 7 when Ken Hotate says, “Perd...That is EXACTLY what happened.” The Office in general has a lot of good GIFs to use, and they are my favorite to use in conversations such as the one where Michael Scott says to Oscar, “Why don’t you explain this to me like I am five.”

It is these changes that have shaped my life and finding things I enjoyed which may or may not change over time. It of course won’t change me quoting the same three shows, but in terms of taste that is yet to be seen. One way to look at it is the ride they have at Disney’s Magic Kingdom Park over in Tomorrowland, The Carousel of Progress. That is personally my favorite as the song is catchy but oh so beautiful in its words of wisdom through melody. “It’s a great, big, beautiful tomorrow, shining at the end of every day- and tomorrow’s just a dream away-He follows his dream with mind and heart.”

Yo, I used to watch the Mr. Men Show too! When I was so young when that came out, but it was one of my favorites. I've always kind of seen the world as moving in cycles, one after the other. Something comes in, develops, changes things up, and then those things that are changed come in and get developed too.

This was an interesting post and I loved seeing your point of view! The advancement of technology in the past five years alone is utterly insane. Thank you so much for posting!

Hi! I like your topic cause it's super duper relevant to all of us. Technology is advancing very quickly, and it's super beneficial to us even if it scares us a little. I personally like the convenience of technology, we can always see the benefits.

I like your way of explaining change, by saying it is a carousel. And your GIF is a great way to end your post. But, this does have me thinking that not all progressions may have ended in a positive way.
