Disney

Disney is one of the biggest companies out there providing one of the biggest entertainment outlets for us, and it keeps growing as a company. New things have been put out by Disney in all kinds of forms, merch, Disney parks, stores, games, shows, movies, you name it, but they’re quite the impressionable company we know and love. Disney is supposed to represent the hopes and dreams of young children to grow to chase your dreams and make them into reality. Now many people of all ages, young and old, have come together to work towards their dreams coming true. Disney is by far one of the most magical companies in the world to bring happiness to millions of people. However, I am a strong believer of everyone and everything having hidden bones that people don’t know to the public. It’s not a matter of hidden secrets because they are public, but rather things not brought up because of the generation we live in today. We as people and the things around us are proof of history and how much we have improved into the society we are in now, with feminism, freedom, as well as inclusivity being accepted.

Disney to our generation is like crack because it’s magical, bright, and happy, so much so that we can’t get enough so it will always be for everyone of all ages. Going back on our society, and its trends, to stay relevant, Disney has been pushing feministic movies through live actions that are now more apparent than it was before. The thing is that we didn’t notice these things as children, but there are quite a few examples from back then that empower what today’s society stands for now. Take Nani from Lilo & Stitch, and I can say it is by far my favorite example because not only was she an independent woman, but a parental figure in Lilo’s life. Not only did Nani work hard to be a parental figure, but she worked to maintain their home, and keep Lilo by her side even though they’re sisters. Another example is Princess and The Frog which is my favorite movie because of the way Tiana actively pushes to overcome all the obstacles presented to her. There is also Pocahontas who is unafraid of anyone and anything as her curiosity gets the best of her rather than fear of dangers. There are many other childhood movies which presented strong women, and as much as I love it all, I do have a critique, and that is love being factored into these movies. Strong women are allowed to fall in love as feminism isn’t about being above men but rather treated as equally as men, and Mulan did a good job at showing both sides. The fact that Mulan had to dress up as a man to be treated like one, and yet there was no word of her having to marry, nor any trials a woman faced as they differed from those of men. Yet Mulan took matters into her own hands to save her father, and at the end she fell in love with General Li Shang. He in return loved her back as the strong woman that she was and he acknowledged it, and things did not change because they fell in love.

Now some topics are reviewed in a negative light despite them being a part of history, even if it is tragic events. One can take tweets as an example because I have seen how people get backlash for something they said many years ago when the language was the trend. Trends go as fast as they come, and some people don’t understand that, yet they easily try to put people on the stands for something stupid. Many years from now, people might just get cancelled for saying a celebrity’s dress slayed because in that future it could be offensive. Overall, it’s not that serious, and yet people find a way to make a big deal out of nothing; but I do support the public that fights against racism for an example. All people have hidden bones, and Disney has quite a few of them, however it’s not to stir up trouble but rather just bring up several thoughts. There are some things that Disney did good in shoving down into the abyss of non-existence, and those would be the side that made Disney a bit dark.

There are cartoons, scenes, and rides even that were altered due to the stuff that was connected to them which is unacceptable. I know for a fact that most people remember when they altered Pirates of the Caribbean ride, specifically the scene where they were auctioning off “wenches” to be brides. In 2017 is when Disney made changes to that scene, and now if you go the auction is now a series of items instead of women. There is even a female pirate taking charge in that very same scene, and it overall created controversy between people wanting things to stay the same while others loved it for changing a demeaning scene. Recently as well, they have announced changes to the ride Splash Mountain, and its overall theme yet there are many that are upset about it. The ride was inspired and associated to the film, “Song of the South”, which goes into the times of slavery, so to have a ride like this stay open as long as it has, I am surprised. It’s crazy because even the CEO of Disney in 2020 said the film would never be on Disney Plus as by his words in the article is, “"not appropriate in today's world."” It is, however, being renovated as we speak, into a Princess and The Frog theme ride which is said to open in 2024. It is something to keep in mind that these changes are barely being implemented within these past 10 years, which puts one big question into mind, which is what took so long? These changes are not the only changes that have been done, however this video on YouTube tells the evolution solely on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

Overall, Disney, much like many other successful businesses, have bones that they have since long buried as they constantly update anything associated with them to continue to gain favor from the public. In doing so, these businesses will continue to gain money from the consumers who are more than willing to spend money to experience the magic within these successful businesses. I do like the fact that Disney is mindful of these things and continues to produce movies we all know and love. In terms of accuracy, I can only speak of Coco which is another one of my favorite movies. I love all the colors that were shown in the movie and the representation of day of the dead being the surrounding theme. This was one of those emotional movies where Miguel was trying to achieve his goal of being a musician even if it meant going against his family only to find that it was about family. He realized how important family truly is, and how family must stick together to overcome challenges. Disney did a great job being able to pull on our heartstrings as Disney is all about family, magic, and happiness. In the case of the movie Coco, they incorporated just that, especially in the end when Miguel was singing Remember me and from there everyone came together which then started the very last song, Proud Corazon. Disney has done a good job so far in changing their past mistakes and coming up with more acceptable things we have come to know and love. They may have made mistakes along the road but in the end, times change as time goes by, and Disney has kept up to date with trends to stay on top. Now personally this GIF is relatable because I do become very excited just on the thought of watching a Disney movie.

The Disney show runners know exactly what they are doing. They make a fortune on selling “happily ever after.” It’s the nostalgia that always brings you back.

When I first heard about what was going to happen to Splash Mountain I became very upset because that was one of my favorite rides. I truly think that Disney should stop making remakes or sequels of their previous movies (they will be making a third Frozen movie and fifth Toy Story!) and either make completely new ones or just show the old ones more. Because the new generation really should see the lessons we learned from the older movies we saw when we were their age. Although Disney is still doing a very good job in other subjects in their company.

I didn't know that about Splash Mountain's origins. Thank you for sharing that!

The thing I've been noticing a lot recently is the increasing hate towards POC actresses playing Disney princesses. Honestly, I don't understand why people get mad at the changes made by Disney. It makes sense to be more mindful and respectful. I understand not wanting to get rid of nostalgia, but Disney is a brand, thus, it needs to keep up with society to market itself.

Replying to

Unfortunately, "nostalgia" has become a bit of dog whistle for wanting to continue to be racist, sexist, transphobic, etc.

I love disney for the same reason, I loved all the princess movies growing up. I think that they made me into the super girly girl that I am. I love the sense of magic that surrounds them, it's a dream when you're a little girl. The new movies aren't fully up to my speed, but some for sure are still cute.
