Navigating Artificial Intelligence

AI?

Artificial Intelligence is now commonly known and is getting more popular by the second. We see it every day without realizing it. Most things nowadays are AI-generated, or at least switching to being AI-generated. How do we navigate a world that is constantly changing? How do we Navigate AI?

What Is AI?

AI has recently become more popular due to the app called ChatGPT. ChatGPT stands for Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer. Most people before ChatGPT thought AI was a robot, nonexistent, and or only happened in the movies. According to a Britannica article called, Artificial intelligence - Reasoning, Algorithms, Automation | Britannica, AI is “a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.” People now use AI for everyday common tasks like writing papers, solving math equations, or giving new recipes for food. Other people use AI software for more complicated tasks such as making AI music, AI Advertisements, or even making AI robots to be used as “friends.” For example, Snapchat decided to make AI for snap users. Snapchat Support says, “My AI can answer a burning trivia question, offer advice on the perfect gift for your BFF’s birthday, help plan a hiking trip for a long weekend, or suggest what to make for dinner.” Many people find the use of AI to be scary, how do we navigate it, so it doesn't go corrupt? In August of 2023, Snapchat AI posted a short video of a wall. An article by CNN Snapchat users freaks out over AI bot that had a mind of its own | CNN Business says that it “Turns out, this was Snapchat working to make its My AI tool even more realistic.” The company told CNN it was a glitch. “My AI experienced a temporary outage that’s now resolved,” The Article claims many people found the outage scary and are curious about what else AI can do. There are many other more advanced things that AI can do like drive a car or diagnose illnesses. The growth of AI will continue to do crazy things people could call futuristic.

How did AI Start?

AI originally started back in 1935 created by the computer pioneer, Alan Turing. According to the Britannica article Artificial intelligence - Reasoning, Algorithms, Automation | Britannica, the article described the first form of AI as “an abstract computing machine consisting of a limitless memory and a scanner that moves back and forth through the memory, symbol by symbol, reading what it finds and writing further symbols. The actions of the scanner are dictated by a program of instructions that also is stored in the memory in the form of symbols.” This device was considered the first form of AI and computers. The first modern-day example of AI was Chess, specifically computer based. The Britannica article says, “In 1945 Turing predicted that computers would one day play very good chess, and just over 50 years later, in 1997, Deep Blue, a chess computer built by IBM (International Business Machines Corporation), beat the reigning world champion, Garry Kasparov, in a six-game match.” This was the first understanding that a computer could out-think a human. It understood what Kasparov was thinking and outplayed him. This was the first time someone was defeated by AI technology.

How to Navigate AI?

With AI quickly growing and being used for everyday tasks, how do we use it, and how do we use it safely? AI is still a new process, so the negative effects known about it are still limited. It is still questionable whether AI is completely safe but as it becomes more important in our current day and age, it’s important to adjust and learn the newest technologies, to better ourselves and improve our knowledge. Here are a few devices that use AI that have become more popular, due to the growth of it.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is used by many people for different tasks. According to ChatGPT ChatGPT (openai.com), it says “In essence, ChatGPT is a type of AI model that excels at conversational and text-based tasks, and it is part of the broader field of artificial intelligence. It has been used in chatbots, virtual assistants, content generation, and many other applications that involve interacting with text and language.” People use this computer app to help with homework assignments, work projects, and research projects. ChatGPT also says “ChatGPT can be used for a wide range of applications, including answering questions, generating human-like text, providing recommendations, simulating conversation with users, and assisting with various language-related tasks.” ChatGPT became popular in recent years due to the high demand for media and technologies. The reason for ChatGPT's growth according to the app is because “the combination of breakthrough technology, accessibility, versatility, and practical implementations contributed to the rapid rise in popularity of ChatGPT, specifically GPT-3, in the world of artificial intelligence and natural language processing. Its capabilities continue to inspire and drive advancements in the field.” ChatGPT runs a lot of other AI-driven devices like Snapchat AI, Trint AI translator, and certain AI music devices.

AI Devices

There are many different, apps, devices, or computer AI-powered tools. In the year 2023, the popularity of AI apps increased, and more people used AI than ever. This was positive and negative. The actor strike and AI music are examples of this. The actor strike of 2023 could partially blame AI. According to an article by CNN, it says “the actors union that has had 160,000 members on strike since last week, is afraid that artificial intelligence will lead to far fewer employed actors in the future.” There has now been a shortage of screenwriters, producers, actors, etc. Making it all AI-based. AI music is doing something similar where AI can make up different voices, songs, and melodies. It can even have artists recreate preexisting songs.

Here is an example of this. Ariana Grande AI generation is singing a Lana Del Ray song.

A different AI-powered app is Trint Transcriptions. It takes a video, copies it, and transcribes all the words into written text. People who write, or interview often tend to use this app. Snapchat AI is also part of an app that gives suggestions, help, and advice to snap users. There are many other apps or devices that are AI-powered, that can help someone in any situation.

Safety of AI

Since the beginning of the internet and computers, safety concerns have always been a big factor. As time evolves so do risks with technology. Nowadays we have to deal with the safety of AI and whether someone using it the right way. Using AI is tricky and whether someone is using it correctly is important. AI could make it very easy to cheat or plagiarize. It's important to credit AI as a source when using it for professional settings. It is important to follow any guidelines provided about AI provided by the instructor, company, or policies provided. If there aren't any AI rules, following proper citation etiquette, this would be the proper way of using AI. It's also important to recheck AIs' work to make sure it is correct. It will not always give you the correct information.

Cost of AI

Depending on what you are using AI for, it could vary in cost and expenses. According to ChatGPT ChatGPT (openai.com) it says, “The cost of implementing AI can vary widely depending on several factors, including the complexity of the AI system, the specific application, the scale of deployment, and the technology used.” A few factors that could influence the cost of AI according to ChatGPT are development and training, data collection and process, hardware, software and tools, maintenance, and education, etc. ChatGPT states “The cost of AI implementation can range from relatively low for small-scale projects to very high for large, complex, and mission-critical applications.” Depending on the goals of the creator or user prices for AI will vary.

Future of AI

Every day consists of new versions of AI, we can see that in new music, advertisements, and technology. When it comes to AI and what it plans to do in the future, there are endless impossibilities. When asking ChatGPT what it wants to do in the future, it listed subjects like healthcare, Autonomous Systems, Ethics and Regulation, Education, finance, climate change, etc. It is important to remember some of these take time and will take trial and air, AI also makes mistakes and needs to be corrected. There are still many steps to perfecting AI.

Navigating AI

As AI grows keeping up with it will be a daily challenge as it changes. Staying up to date with the most recent technologies is the best way of growing and understanding. There are basic etiquette rules of AI, and this is only the beginning of it. To find out more basic information about AI the best place to ask is AI. AI is learning just like humans, as we learn how to understand this type of media it changes and learns something new. Keep working on AI skills to improve your knowledge about it, as navigating it changes every day.

I'm with Michelle on this one - I've heard of AI and ChatGPT in some specific contexts, and I know there's discussion about applying it to different fields, but I didn't know how many different things it was already being used for. I think you've tried to cover some good bases here, since you're touching on both the benefits and the risks. Good job!

This was a very interesting and open discussion on AI and how it impacts our lives. I am especially partial to the cause of the writers' and actors' strikes, AI taking over art is a real ethical and human issue I think. I think the most interesting and lightbulb-clicking moment for me was the chess AI; I have played chess against the computer before and never really thought of them as artificial intelligence. AI really has come a long way and will continue to do so, so this was an interesting look into that.

I like most people have a plethora of different emotions when it comes to AI. On the one hand, it can be an extremely useful tool but on the other hand, I worry about what it means for the future of art. I will say that the AI protection for writers under the recent WGA agreement which prohibits AI from writing or rewriting

any literary material does at least start to set a precedence for authentic authorship and job protection in the film industry.

Interesting, I hadn’t heard about that restriction. Hopefully It will keep AI from completely replacing writers and authors for a while.

I fully believe that AI will change the world as we know it - perhaps even more so than the internet itself. As technology continues to advance at an exponential rate, so will this technology. Just recently, I was made aware of a press conference that Nvidia gave in regard to their newest developments in processors, demonstrating a several second video clip of highly detailed cars racing on a track. It was fully AI generated, and yet appeared in high resolution. They plan on implementing these processors into quantum computing, and I anticipate that this will enter into commercial tech as well (cell phones and laptops). It’s a scary thing, because I don’t know if ANYONE is going to have…
