Vaccinations
Science and technology are not the only things that continue to revolve around us and that is diseases. We know how quickly diseases spread and take our loved ones away as we have read in history books and even have come to witness. It is through trial and error that people worked hard to get rid of diseases, and finally developed the solution through vaccines. Vaccinations are the product of science as we’ve improved medicine in terms of effectiveness and quality in cures found for most diseases. The topic of vaccines as a whole has brought people together in one way or another in both good and bad. Vaccines impacted the world of medicine, and society as a whole with those who are all for it; but there are others who are against it. It is only appropriate to talk about the one disease that everyone at the moment has lived through and continues to live through.
Technology
There is no denying that technology has in fact brought us many everyday items such as the television, cellphones, and gaming entertainment. However, we also have technology aid us in the science and medical departments which have improved. It also made room for better hygiene with the sterilizations and difficult surgeries over time because back then the chances for infections were higher than today’s modern world. A thing to think about are medicine tools from back then and what births were like without all the accessible accommodations women have now. Then there are also items like hearing aids, prosthetics, and much more as can be read in the timeline of medical tool advancements. It’s from Yale, school of medicine providing a timeline of achievements or what was available at the time from 6000 BCE to 2015. It would be no surprise with how much things have advanced that we have vaccinations that are up to date and continue to improve as time goes on.
Health
Health is a delicate subject because everyone is born different and in that same sense, people have to take different measures to stay healthy. However health does become compromised when there are surrounding natural causes that cause our health to deteriorate. In many situations it happened that something foreign and unknown came to affect an individual which would then spread onto the next person, which is disease. Thanks to technology and how hygiene improved the lives of the people, some diseases were preventable through hygiene, but there were also alternative solutions provided as well. Medicine is an important part of our society, it shows that we’ve evolved, and it is thanks to evolution that we have produced a variety of medicine to utilize to our advantage. One can see through the timeline of health What makes us unwell and what makes us better as well as how we could prevent it, or well at least back then how it could have been prevented depending on the problem. Health is vital and important to continue to make discoveries that were not made before as our technology gets better for science and vice versa.
Pandemic
A pandemic is known to be an epidemic of a diseases spreading far and wide and working its way around the world. In our modern world of today, when we see mention of a pandemic, we think about COVID-19 because it is the current epidemic that continues to change. It shook everyone to their core and resulted in a variety of negative events such as racism towards Asians because it was rumored that China was responsible for the pandemic which spread the word everywhere. There were people who were in denial about the whole thing, and people would even claim that it wasn’t real along with anti-vaccination groups. When it first hit, the disease was intense and resulted in a high death count, and some of those who did survive were affected in their health for the most part.
Impact as a Society
As a society we have to work together as one, or at least in the bare minimum we have for the most part as we all laugh at memes, videos, and love other countries as well as learning languages. However I believe due to the shock of the pandemic, a lot of people could hardly believe such disease was upon us. Masks became required to wear, and yet people were struggling with the concept of it that some would wear it incorrectly or have it down on their chin. People would panic when they would hear a person coughing or sneezing because they would assume that they had COVID-19. There was also a recommendation where they suggested people be about 6 feet apart, which is what everyone did. Now before people maintained the distance of 6 feet, before the pandemic, people had personal space. Fresh after regulations calmed down and no longer necessary, people forgot what personal space was.
Solution
The solution took a while to formulate but it was in December 11, 2020 that the vaccine was out, or at least for certain ages. Over time more vaccines were developed and later available to people of all ages. In the beginning of finding the solution of vaccinations, it was required to be vaccinated in many businesses, as well as companies for a job. Now there are more vaccines for COVID-19 and the variants of it that have been spreading. The solution is mainly found in vaccinations and keeping up with the approved doses in order for our bodies to be protected for the most part from every current variant that the vaccine can cover. However despite having the vaccine, there are other forms in which we are able to stay protected, and that is through prevention methods. We can see more information through the Department of Health and Human Services.
Prevention
Vaccines are at the top of the list for prevention, but there are other things we as individuals can do such as using masks, tests, and other prevention if you have been or f eel you’ve been exposed. Using a mask is not done as often as it was back in the panic of it all, but now not so much but it is still recommended to use a mask if you start feeling symptoms. Tests used to be done at certain places where people would stay in their cars and get their results later. Now that is not really the case unless you are showing symptoms of having it, but other than that, you are now able to get tested if you feel you’ve been exposed or been with someone who was exposed. There are other methods of prevention you can take in order to stay safe from COVID-19 as provided from the CDC in updated vaccine recommendation.
Closing Statement
Overall science and technology really have been a lifesaver in the long run since back then to the world of today. We only keep on advancing from here and onwards, however there are those that reject science as a whole due to religion but also there are those who don’t believe in science. I have only stated facts and presented the resources which contain professionals and scholars who studied deeply into the subject. It’s almost hard to deny facts that have shown results, but in this country people are free to believe what they deem to be credible. It doesn’t stop the fact that vaccines have saved many lives and will continue to protect many lives. In terms of science and technology, one can only go forward but never backwards. I know for a fact that there are a lot of people out there that have a friend or family member or someone who knows someone that was affected by the pandemic. The best way to move on from the unfortunate events that occurred are to acknowledge science or at least the cures that science has brought upon us.
Wow, the timelines you cited in your essay were really neat! I really hope that one day, we can all figure out that most of the things science has brought us are really just here to help us. It seems like a shocking amount of people would rather go back to the days where the way you treated the flu was with rum and amputations.
Science and especially technology are so important in our lives, it's basically everything!
You are right Griselda, science and technology have big parts in our lives now. A lot of stuff wouldn't be possible now if it wasn't for them. Thanks to them who knows what pandemics could still be around today.
The timeline you shared is really fascinating! It's almost overwhelming to think about how much we've advanced and how far we've yet to come. The ways that politics (like Amanda commented) and capitalism have influenced, and likely will continue to influence, that timeline for the worse is truly a tragedy.
We need to remember that science and advances in medicine are to protect and heal us. I hate that it is now used as a political pawn. All this change needs to be embraced and the hard working scientists and doctors need to be acknowledged and praised for their never-ending work.
